Comment: Until General Vaught, very few people even knew that I had served my country. After WWI and II and Korea women came home to 'you are either a lesbian or a prostitute - how did you service the guys?' However, as a WAC in 1950-53 I faced very little of that kind of thing. I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm just saying that as I view women veteran sights and as I meet and talk with the young women in military today, I hear it more often and the abuse gets worse. I have decided, since I am retired and have time, to put together an essay on the harassment of women in the military, both as abuse and discrimination in promotions. I will then send these essays to every member of the US Congress and Senate, to the President and to the VA and VA Women's Center (because I find young women discharged as a result of sexual abuse are not being cared for in some VA Centers. In my working life, I wrote freelance articles for local newspaper and published two books. My books were of a political nature since I spent 35 years in various leadership positions in the Democratic Party. In 1980, I became the first women veteran to run for Congress on a major party ticket. So I know what it taskes to influence the political process. We need to decide what changes are needed, suggest actual programs and talk with those who with push changes through respective committees. It is important to remember those who hold office think they already have all the answers - they don't - so we have to suggest their direction of thought.
