during the late 80's, until I retired in 1993. One in particular was SFC Connie Saige, now retired and living in Phoenix, AZ.
Connie was my right arm. She performed at a level of 120% nearly all the time. She was an example for the other women to follow.
She raised the bar for them. I value the friendship of Connie and her husband, Tom. When ever I call from Phila., Connie always
answers, "TOP , is that you?" and this reminds me what friendship is all about.

Comment: Very informative site. As a female vet, it is nice to see so many other's involved. Are any other female vets having terrible times with the VA or the doctors? I have found that having a diagnoses of PTSD leads to many statements that all lead to "its in your head" and 99.9% of the time it is not, unless it is from the headache I get from the BS or the migraine I have that is ignored. Not enough women doctor's, that are knowledgeable about women, in the VA system. So frustrating. After 30 years of fighting with the VA, nothing changes.
Still, this is a great site.

Comment: I was in the Marine Corps and the First sgt of Service company Ist MARDIV when they first integrated the women with the men. We were only given a few days notice. Our CO Capt Polachowsky(sp?)immediately held a meeting of the company leaders and told us we had to have the women do evrything the men did otherwise the men would resent the women and the women would wouldn't feel a part of the unit.
I feel like we did a pretty good job but we probably made some mistakes. If the women were truck mechanics they fixed trucks, if they were supply people they worked in supply. It was sometimes a challege to cousel young women afterworking with men only for 18 years. WE felt like we did a good job of the integration but it would be interestring to hear from these women and get there prespective. We tried to use whoever was best suited for the task regardless of gender. There were alot of artificial barriers people in other units tried to throw up, like "women can't be the company duty because they might have to go in a man's room"!!! The answer we gave for both men and women was to knock first and it seemed to work. I think a lot of problems were solved by a positive attitude and good leadership. There was an incident where a man from our company raped a woman from another company and he recieved 10 years in Levanworth from his courts martial. Another incident was when the Officer of the Day was inspecting?? the women at 2100 in their room. He was told to retire and wasa out of the Corps within days. So there were some clear headed people even back in the stone ages of 1976. The women I met for the most part were seriuos and professional for the most part. The senior NCO was a blck women named Sgt Pink who helped us to learn fast. The men in the unit with a little prodding from above treated them in a brother sister relationship. I'm sure there are bad things that happened to some women but my experience was positive on my side and I hope on there side. Any man who is threatened by an woman being a good Marine needs to look at himself and decide why he is so insecure. Being an "old hand" at that time even after several months I would see a woman going in the barraks wearing civilian clothes and wonder what she was doing there. Old habits take some new learning. Anyway just some thoughts from an old Marine and a "man" also

Comment: Hi. I enlisted in the Army in Mar '78. Did basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. (our training cycle was the last one to be in the WAC's),& A.I.T. at Ft Benjamin Harrison, IN (75C). Was in from Mar'78-Mar'81. Then, was in the Army reserves from '81 - '98 (both inactive and active status). All in all, I've got a total of 13 good yrs (combining both active duty and reserve time). While in the reserves, I attended 91B in early '83, and 91D in mid '86. I enjoyed being in (esp. the reserves) :)
