Comment: Member of Veterans of Underage Military Service (VUMS)[enlisted in WAAC at age 14] and Women's Army Corps Veterans Association. Served in WWII from March 1944 through July 1947 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Fort Meade, Maryland; Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania; Camp Stoneman, Stockton, California; Tokyo/23rd Criminal Investigation Division, Tokyo, Japan. Also worked with USN Bureau of Ships, Washington, D.C. and Naval Shipbuilding Scheduling Activity in Philadelphia as a shipbuilding statistician/conference reporter until 1955. Comment: I am truly impressed with this site- I was in the 82nd Airborne Division from 80-85 and would enjoy hearing from anyone there during that time- God knows there weren't many women.
For those of you considering a military career, my personal opinion is that between the Army and Navy, the Army is much more female friendly (Not to mention easier to make rank),
but a lot has changed in all the services, for both men and women in the last 20 years. I have teenagers myself, and i have to say I would NOT recommend it as a career- for many reasons, please email me if you wnat more details.

Comment: I'm just starting to try and find any persons who were connected with the 349th Field Artillery Battalion. We were school troops in Ft. Sill. Started training for Europe then shipped to Mere Wilts, England. Went thru France, Holland, Belgium and then supported the 9th Army crossing the Rhine. We fought mostly in Bavaria. I shipped home from Greding, Germany in spring of '46. Anyone else out there?

I found out recently that I can join without being a citizen, which made me the most happiest person in the world!!! But the problem is that I have to wait to get my residency until November. I want to join so bad. I believe in that qoute "You can be what u want to be in the United States" but I am afraid I won't get my papers after all because I made a big mistake of driving without a license. I paid the fine but I think it will affect my status. I was wondering is there any way of someone helping me in this area? Someone who can guide me or instruct me in what to do? I am embarrased to tell my recruiter (who is a guy) the truth. I havn't told him that I don't have my papers yet, but I just wanted to see if I was eligable. This is my dream and I want to serve the U.S in all I can. If there is any solution to my problem then please, please email me. I am pleading for any help. graduate this May, and for one of my classes we are supposed
to form our own interest groups. I am researching women in
the military, more specifically, a womans willingness to
fight in combat while in the services; I also want to
approace the general public's willingness to allow their
daughters to fight.
If you could please give me some general statistics about

PS My MOS is 2531; Field Radio Operator, and with the
restrictions on women currently, I will not be allowed to
see action.

Comment: I've thoroughly enjoyed this site!! I retired as an OSCS(SW) (E-8) on 15 Oct 1997, after 23 years of service. I'm looking for any of my shipmates from the first women at sea program on USS Vulcan (AR-5) 1978-1982, USS Ainsworth ( FFT 1092) 1992-1993, USNS Truckee 1987-1989, and the precom unit of CVN 74, USS John C. Stennis. I was a First for all the above ships and I sure had a lot of interesting adventures!! I came in during the mid seventies and was at the forefront of all the navy Women' programs. I was on the Presidential Commission held in 1992..(covering Women in Combat).I testified as a senior enlisted woman who had shipboard experience and Surface Warfare Qualified. I had quite a love/hate relationship in the Navy. Great times and painful times!! I have a 30 year old son and a beautiful 4 yr. old Granddaughter...who saluted me at my retirement ceremony!! :-) I have a wonderful man that has stood by me during some really painful experiences ..he is a retired MMCM (Nuke). I'll be back to visit this site on a regular basis!! Let's stick together...no matter what branch of service we've been in, we all are bonded together through service to our country!! Comment: I will be at Fort Jackson for basic on June 23. I am writing this in reference to the entry posted by someone named Stacey. I had the same problem with running, I have no stamina. In my training with dance I have learned to have short bursts of energy rather than long endurance periods. I asked an expert on running what I should do. He said to use the tried and true walk/jog method. Start out with a good stretch, then jog for a while, push yourself but then let yourself walk for a few minutes, then jog again. Remember to cool down properly too. Your endurance will get better each time you do this. I could not ran farther than 1/4 of a mile, but shortly after I started with this method I was able to make it 1 mile. Now I am doing pretty good with 2-3 mile courses. Good luck!

Comment: I love your web site! As a former military woman (USAF, 6 years, 1975-1981), I was especially heartened to see the number of men who have visited this site. It gives me hope that maybe the guys care as much as we do. My most amusing experience in the military was serving as an aircraft maintenance technician in Germany (Rhein-Main AB, 1977, which at that time shared runways with the civilian Frankfurt Airport-don't know if it does now) and being asked by a foreign national maintenance worker (in full fatigues and with grease all over my face) if I was a stewardess on the C-141 about to take off. Ha. I also had a newspaper article written about me in 1977 or 78 by a reporter named Joe Knox from the Greensboro Journal, about women in the military. I think he was there to cover the story about Reforger troops from Seymour Johnson AB. He was a very nice man, and wrote a pretty cool article. To all young girls visiting this web site-you go girls! I am with you all the way - wish all of you the best. These days I am a civilian computer programmer-a profession not very open to women when I was young. Bell was the first Sgt. I ever met (during hold-over before basic. Sharon Cox, Judy Hunt, Pace, Vicki (Hysell) Crutchfield, Lois Hartman, Robin ?, Carmen ? (I think she has a message here, but I couldn't get connected to her http), Neldagae Brindley, Cal ?, are a few of the name I remember. Also on one message board there was a Mary Ziegler that I think I was in basic with, but tried to email her and the email won't go through. I had red hair, 5'6" and skinny (not any more!!). Comment: Thankyou.This is a great site, its about time. I am on exchange from Australia in Ontario, Canada. I am dying to enter the US Marine Corps, but have been unable to get any first hand information, could a female member of the USMC please contact me with any information, such as what I will have to do to contact a recruiter once establishing permanent residence in the US and what to expect of boot camp and the Corps. Comment: Terrific! I was stationed at Ft. McClellan, Alabama from 12/63 until 6/65, Basic in Company D, then Clerical School, then was head Classroom Assistant in the Officers' Training School. Anyone remember those days? Scarry times: George Wallce was in office, radio stations were being bombed, Viet Nam was becoming known........the best of times: young women working hard to prove we deserved a place! I'd love to get in touch, especially with LUPE FLORES, from New Mexico. We lost contact many years ago, but she was a good friend. I now have three grandchildren and have gone back to college! When I think of those days, though, I feel young again!
