Comment: Right now military women are getting a bad rap, and the old debate is up again. Hey girls, don't shy away from doing what you love, just because of negative stuff. I love fighters! I fly them. I love surfing. Nothing stops me. Do it - Be happy!

Comment: I signed up for delayed enlistment in March of 1974, then served on active duty from August 1974 to August of 1978. I was stationed at Fort Jackson, the Presidio of Monterey, Goodfellow AFB, Zoeckler Station ROK, and Fort Lewis. Most of the time I was a Korean linguist, but I played flute in the post band for the final three months.
Thank you for setting up such an informative site. I wish it had been available lo those many years ago. Military service and its aftermath were very isolating.
Is anyone else upset that the same problems are *still* occurring in the military? Rape, sexual harassment, and the singling out of women by the media just because they are women (thank you for your service and sacrifice, Jessica Lynch, Lori Piestewa, and others, but a lot of men went through the same things) are just tips of the icebergs. The problem of integration of the sexes in the military is deeply ingrained in our society. Maybe setting up a line unit made up entirely of women would be radical enough to topple the old paradigm. Any takers?

Comment: I love this site, and keep hoping to hear from some of my Army buddies from Basic Training in 1959/1960 at Ft. McClellan, AL., and from Ft. Sill, OK., where I worked in the Visitor's Bureau at McNail Hall - I loved the Military and found many dear friends during my two years in the Army. I joined in Nov. 1959, and received my Honorable Discharge in Nov. 1961 at Ft. Sill, OK. My husband of 42-years also served in the Army, and we met at Ft. Sill, OK.
Our youngest son (Brian) served in the United States Marine Corps from 1991 through 1995 and received an Honorable Discharge. He since became a Police Officer for three years, and now drives an 18-Wheeler. Our hearts go out to our Military over in Iraq and in many other parts of the World. We send our love and prayers, and we hope to have you all home very soon!!!! God Bless the USA!!!!

Comment: I think we do need to look at how the introduction of females into military units effects those units. PFC England and the female general commanding the prison do not represent women in the armed forces any more than the men guilty of abuse.
Being honest however and looking at sexual dynamics and their effect on discipline needs to be examined.
I am one that doesn't beleive that it serves the interests of the military and thus the nation to have women serving in combat arms specialties. The service and sacrifice of women soldiers shouldn't be slighted. There are many fine women soldiers in our armed forces. Many have bravely paid the ultimate in this war. I just think honest and thoughtful attention should be given to where it's best they serve. Desires, political correctness, and social engineering will not serve our soldiers, of both sexes, as well as that of thoughtful analysis.

Comment: Reading memories in the guestbook, brought back some fond memories of my own. Especially reading an inquiry about Sgt Tillie, Ft McClellan. I joined (1959) because my Aunt was in WWII, She loved it. My daughter Edie Mallory joined in 1988 and served in Operation Desert Storm. My husband served 20 years in the Army. The military will always be a part of our lives.

Comment: I recieved word this week that I am a recipient of the HPSP scholarship for veterinaruans. I am excited and terrified of being in the Army, and of being an officer. Does anyone have advice on books where I can learn about the various cultures in the Army? I suspect there is more than one! Plus, thanks for the inspirational words on physical fitness, I will get there!
