I am considering joining the Navy after I graduate from college in a few years, but if I do so, I would like to make a career out of it.**The question is, will I be able to have a healthy family life if I do so?**Will the time appart from my future husband and children and hectic lifestyle be extremely detremental?**I want a career, but my family should definately be more important.

Welcome Ms Cates!****** There are many happy families in the Navy...some where both husband and wife are service members and others that only the man or the woman is a service members. I chose to get out when my daughtr was getting ready to start school..Ive often wondered how things would have been if I would have remained in the military. Knowing the kids as I do now they would have enjoyed going different places and living in different cultures at least my daughter would have for sure. Kids are pretty adaptable to most things:). The times apart are sad at times but the reunions are wonderful!!!! Let me know if you have questions Ill be happy to try to answer or direct you somewhere that you can get answers. Nice to meet you and take care!****************************************Sherr y

Hi there I just wanted to add my two cents here.**I have three children and they are a little older now [12,13,16], and I am married.**We are not a dual military family though.**The Navy is now homebasing sailors so that it will be possible for families to stay in the same area and establish some roots.**With dual military they try to have the rotation so that while on is on shore duty the other is on sea duty.**I am luck Before I got married this year I ha an Aunt who took care of my kids for me while I was gone.**She lives in New York and I am in Fla.**the kids loved the break and**of course loved the reunions.**Do not be fooled this does get hard on them at times.**Now that I am married my husband will be caring for the children.**I am on sea duty and getting ready for a 6 mos deployment.**Everyone will miss everyone.**I do not like being seperated from my family but while I am gone I use that time to reflect on the way that I handle things and it gives me a chance to get a new prospective on my life.**My kids used to write me tear jerker letters but they do not do that any more.**They are actually looking foward to me leaving so I can send them some goodies home[ the nerve!I have to roll my eyes on that one!], and they want Gold.**Just remember that communication is important while you are away.**If you can get stationed in a place like Jacksonville where there are 3 bases co-location is easier.**It sometimes takes a long time though.**Good luck to you.

Hello Again R. Case:)******In the event that there are two active duty parents, the armed**parents must name a legal guardian...and have plans in place to get the child/children to that guardian if you both had to leave unexpectedly.**Being a soldier, sailor, marine, or airman comes first but that is not to say that the services arent family oriented. Personally, my husband and I never had to be gone at the same time.We had a really great baby sitter whom I met prior to my daughters birth. Jo kept our kids while we were working or standing watch until we got our of the Navy. That was several years ago...we went back to Virginia Beach this past summer and took the kids to see her. It was reallly fun...she remembers as much or more than I do about how her kids and our kids were when they were babies. I had Crystal the first 5 months by myself so it was great to have a great mom around to ask questions.** Thats one thing about the Navy, depending on the job you have, there are some home ports that you can stay in(transfering from shore duty to sea duty) for quite some time although it is normally better for promotion purposes for you to have had a variety of duty stations. My Husband came home when Crystal was 5 months old...it was great seeing them meet for the first time!********Let me know if you think of any other questions:)*************************************** ********* Sherry

What happens if you are unable to find someone to care for your children and both you and your spouse are called away at the same time?<br
