Hi, I have a question about boot camp, and the Navy.**My recruiters don't seem too sure, but I need to know.**I'm an OSVET (other services veteran) and I was on active duty status for 187 days.**The job that I wanted to enlist into was CTI (cryptologic technician interprative) but that job has a stipulation on it that no OSVETs with more than 180 days active duty status will be able to enlist into certain jobs.**I don't understand why this is, and I have a couple questions about that.**I talked to another soon to be recruiter at my recruiting station, and he said that once you get into boot camp they don't care if you're an OSVET or not.**He said with my scores on the DLAB (defense language aptitude battery) (I got a 127) they may take one look at them, and offer me the CTI position.**Is this true?**Also, I was wondering, how long do you have to wait to cross rate, and is it hard to accomplish if a certain field wants you more than the other?**I'm going into OS (a critical rating?) but CTI is more critical than OS and I was wondering if it would be harder than normal to cross rate into CTI from OS?**If someone knows for sure, has any ideas, or has been in this position before, please write back.**Thanks

NO, NO, NO!!**DON'T do it!!!!!**I haven't checked this message board in months, & didn't really intend to respond to anything tonight...until I saw your post.**I hope you haven't signed up yet.**Frankly, that business about OSVETs and the CTI rating sounds like bull to me, but if there's some obscure reason they're doing it, then apply for a waiver.**Do NOT NOT NOT take OS!!**OS isn't a bad rating; some folks like it.**But it's not what YOU want.**AND.. (this is very important)...it's a critical rating.**Some jerk isn't giving you the straight skinny on what that means.**What that means is that they are in desperate need of people in that rate.**The guidance is very specific about cross-rating; you CANNOT cross-rate from a critically undermanned rating to one that's adequately or over manned.**DO NOT count on getting the job you want in boot camp.**That's a great option for people who aren't quite sure what job they want.**It's a very BAD option for you.**You know what you want.**Get it guaranteed in writing BEFORE you join.**I would seriously consider changing recruiters if I were you.**As a matter of fact, I would be very interested in knowing what office you're working with, and the name of your recruiter, if you'd be willing to share that.**Please feel free to drop me a line in email if you'd rather.**Take care, Tracy
