Hi,
I was interested in joining the Army or Navy to learn Japanese. I was wondering which service or if both services offered Japanese to first time enlistees? Also, I will graduate from the University of Memphis this summer with a degree in history. I was wondering if I would recieve a higher rank upon enlisting? I've heard about the loan repayment program; is it just for the Army or does the Navy offer the same program? And if so, what are the differences? Another question I have is for those who have just returned recently from basic training with the Army and the Navy, respectively; what was the training like and where did you train? Is there any free time during basic training? Also, I was also thinking about joining in the intelligence field. What does the background check involve; I mean to say how through is it?
Well, thank you for your answers,
Nicole

I was wondering which service or if both services offered Japanese to first time enlistees? The Navy does not offer this to 1st timers because of the training that you have to be taught first and you have to serve in your designated field. degree in history. I was wondering if I would recieve higher rank upon enlisting? Depends on if you go officer of not. And it depends on your rate. I've heard about the loan repayment program; everyone offers the same thing. what was the training like and where did you train? for Navy, you train at Great Lakes, Illinois by Chicago. It is definitely not hard. Actually, it is way too easy. Is there any free time during basic training? yes, once you have been there so many weeks and have passed all your required tests and things. But for what it is worth, don't plan on having any What does the background check involve; I mean to say how through is it? they will delve into everything about you even into things that you may have been told no one would be able to find out because you were a minor. Like psychological things, petty theft, and such. You will be surprised at what they dig up.

Nicole, From the way you are phrasing your questions, it sounds like you are looking for answers regarding going in enlisted. Since, you are graduating from UM (though I call it MSU), I would think that you would look to going in via OCS.
Background check?? As you are interested in intell, they are pretty thorough.
Good luck what ever you decide.

Nicole, I'm not in the Navy but I have done a background check myself, actually many times. Most of the information is did you have any mishaps with the city, state and federal authorities when you were a kid, same things goes as an adult. We've checked health records, we've checked education records both in highschool and college. Plus, weve checked if people have had any financial outstanding bills that needed to be taken care of. This is usually when the person deals with money. So you can probably expect it to be very focused. Good Luck with what you choose Catherine ICQ 38038204

Criminal records I can understand, because they're always on file somewhere, but when it comes to medical and especially psychological records, I thought they were absolutely confidential. Do they just phone up your doctor and get the info or do they ask you to sign it over and if you say no, then they assume you are hiding something (and find some other reason to officially keep you out of the service?) Not that there is anything of concern in my medical history, but I don't like the idea that someone can get into them.
