My boyfriend served on the USS Vella Gulf when I met him 2 years ago in Virginia. Since then he also served on the USS Hue City. He is no longer on active duty and we have moved to Missori where he is originally from. I don't know very much about the Navy or any military life for that matter, but I do know that he loved it and he misses it. Many nights when we are in bed, he tells me stories about the guys on the ship... most funny... some sad. Listening to him talk about them reminds me of the closeness of families. I realized that families aren't always blood relations. Families are the people you love with, live with and die with everyday.
He has been home almost a year now and I am happy to have him back. He has been out of town for a few weeks with work and I was in bed a couple of nights ago missing him and I thought about all the letters we had written to each other while he was at sea. Reading those letters again, I realized how much I love him and miss him when he is away... and also how much I take him for granted when he is here. I called him at his hotel room at 3:30 in the morning to give him his 'yes' answer. Mike is my family now and I want to make sure that doesn't change.
We shouldn't take for granted our loved ones and friends, especially when we don't have a lot of time to spend with them. Life here is short and we should make the best of what we have been given. Military families know this best, I think. There are many things, some good and some bad, that shape and mold our lives. The Navy has been one of those things. I am grateful for all that it has taught Mike .... and me and know that it will always hold a dear place in our hearts. Enough support can never be given to those who serve and protect our country, our ideals, our homes, our husbands, wives and families. I am forever thankful for all who have protected me.
