Hi,
I am doing a research in my American Ethnic Class on Latina women in the service. I myself am a woman and I was in the service about 3 years ago. Now I am a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. I have a couple of questions for you if you would like to take part in the survey. If you feel unsure about this, I can assure you that this information will be held confidential and I will not provide any names. You don't even have to give me your full name.
The research is to find out what kind of pressures women face in the service and what resources do they find themselves attaining to pursue a healthier relationship with the main culture, men. I consider the female culture a subculture in the service since they are the minority. If you do approve please answer the following questions:
1. Why did you join the service? 2. For how long ? 3. What is your ethnicity? 4. Describe some of your traditions in your culture that are mainly for women? 5. Describe some of the stereotypes women have in your culture? 6. How old where you when you joined? 7. How did you feel when you first went to bootcamp? 8. What new cultures were introduced to you in the service? Please describe. 9. Describe your relationship with men before the service? (e.g. were you treated as equal, were you destined to be a traditional housewife…) 10. Describe your relationship with men while in the service? Please do not include sex, unless you are comfortable with it. (e.g. They would sexually harass you, they would treat you equally, they would allocate clerical work to you…) 11. Did you receive stereotypes in the service as a woman? How about as a Latina ? 12. What was considered normal characteristics or acceptable actions to men as a woman in the service? 13. How do you feel about these stereotypes and norms or prejudices that women receive if any? 14. Do you feel you have attributed to the stereotypes or have you moved away from them? 15. If so what drove you to your weaknesses or strengths in dealing with these stereotypes? What resources did you use to manifest towards your reaction? (e.g. did you have a positive role model, did you turn to your religion, were your values from home well-embedded or were you confused about your own family morals…) 16. If you have visited home, did you admit to any cultural changes within you? For example did you go home on leave and feel as if your belief in marriage through church was not such a big deal anymore.
These are a few questions that I have. I wish we could do this in person, or by the phone. I hope you take the time to add comments too. This is very important to me and I greatly appreciate your responses. I chose this topic because I feel as if women, especially Latinas, go through a huge and abrasive culture shock in the Navy. I know I did, and it’s important to also address the many women who are serving their country today.
Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you soon. Please write to me if you have any questions or comments.
Thank You
