Hi!

I am going to enlist in the Navy, have spoken with the recruiter twice at length and have taken a sample ASVAB test and another sample test to see if I could make it into the Nuclear program.

Are there any 'nukes' out there? What is the job like?? My recruiter says that, although I have excellent grades on both the sample test that I took my chances being awarded an NROTC scholarship is slim... Is this true? He gave me odds of 1 in 35000.

I'm 18 and won't be going into boot camp until some time next summer, but since I am planing to sign a contract soon, I'd really really appreciate some information!

What is the Physical Exam like??? I'm rather worried about that. I'm in fairly good shape, being a lifeguard and enjoying sports...but I am not a super athlete and am not a great runner (I have terrible breathing). What exactly is the doctor..or whoever it is that administers the test...going to be looking for/at?

Thanks in advance!

Kirsten

I can't speak for the Nuke part but the physical exam isn't that difficult except for the routine pap smear. I wouldn't worry too much about that part.

The final run in bootcamp was really hard for me since I have really bad ankels (I had lots of trouble later with the every six month run). My unit ran as a group and supported each other and didn't leave anyone behind. We worked as a team and they were happy with that and passed all of us.

When you get past boot camp you can swim for your PT. In some places it is hard if there isn't a pool avail. at the base. I swam and passed every time. You still have to do the sit ups and push ups but that parts a cake walk.

I can only tell you about my experiences if you have any other questions drop me a line.

I can talk about the Nuke side. I just finished the Nuclear prototype. The last of three schools before going out to the fleet. I joined the Navy 2 years ago and have not go out to sea. I graduate in october. I enjoy the Navy. I am not sure what your chances on NROTC outside of "nuke world" as i call it but i know it goes up when you are in the program. I found the program challenging. email me and i will tell you MUCH more about the program. I am also married to a nuke. the enlistment is a 6 year enlistment.
