Hello! I have a question....would it be possible to get my rate changed during the first 4 years that I am in the Navy? Would it be difficult? How long would it take? I want to get a rate change as soon as I get my US citizenship, so that I can get the job that I really want.... Any responds would be appreciated! Amy

: Hi Amy. Thats a really tough question. There are so many things to take into consideration. Are you planning on going to an "A" school (a school for that rating) for the first rating? If so it will be difficult but not impossible. You could put in a request chit to request to "strike" for another rate, that means you could do on the job training (OJT). It would really start with your present command (how they feel about your request) and the 2 rates you are talking about and how full those 2 rates are.
I would suggest that if you can't get the rate you want to wait until you can. Don't put yourself in a position that would place you in a setting you would be unhappy with.
The Navy spends a lot of money to send people to school and they usually required so many years of additional service to make sure they will be paid back by your work. Rate hopping is not something the Navy takes lightly.
If you have anymore qestions drop me a line....Terri

You usually have to wait until you are within 6 months of your EAOS before they will let you change rates. Everyone who talked about schooling and they navy getting their money worth out of you is correct. Your detailer has to release you from his code and that is usually the hard part. If your rating is undermanned then they usually say no. Look at the CREO message(your admin should have a copy of this) because each rate is rated as to their manning levels. Level 1 is undermanned, level 2 is just right and level 3 is overmanned. If your rate is a level 1 then you probably won't get out of it but if your rate is a level 3 then you have a good chance of getting into a level 1 or 2 rate. They won't let you go from a 3 to a 3. Good Luck

Hi! Thank you all for helping me out here! But I have another question... Are the reasons of getting a rate change being considered at all? I mean, would they reject your request because your reasons were not satisfying....? And how or where can I know if the rate I pick rite now is a level 1,2, or 3? Thanks again everyone! Amy
