I need any helpful advice, please! I swore in to the navy this past Wednesday, August 25th and was put down as a PH, photographer's mate. My recruiter is having me take the DLAB on Monday to consider cryptology. My issue:I have been a photographer for years and love it. Rumer has it that it is a 'go nowhere' field today. Crypt offers many bonuses and great civilian opportunities, but I think it lacks the excitement that I want out of my navy experience. I would like to know more about cryptology, so please send some information my way. Thank you very much. Rikki e-mail=Cochava7@aol.com

: I just wanted to add that I scored a 112 on the DLAB, so this decision must be made! I would love to contact anyone in intelligence or photography. Thank you.

I am planning on joining the Army in cryptoling. From what I've heard it's far from boring, especially when they do security check on everyone you know!:) I don't know much about the Navy or photography in the Navy, perhaps it's short some cryptos?

: e-mail=Cochava7@aol.com I was in the cryptology field for 10 years(maintenance). If you know a foreign language then you'll have fun in the field. If you are on a ship you might be used for navigation interpretation sometimes but you will basically be used for listening in on any communications from foreign countries(shore duty). The duty stations vary depending on what language you know. Since some of the duty stations are in foreign countries you might not have to wear uniforms so you blend in with the locals. If you don't know a language yet then they will send you to whichever school in needed the most at the time. It's hard to post information about the field because alot of it is classified. You will have a security clearance and they will do a thorough background investigation so don't try to keep anything hidden when they ask you. Honesty is the best policy. Also, certain languages have a reenlistment bonus when you get to the end of your first enlistment. You might qualify for up to a $30,000 bonus! Your recruiter should have the SRB message and can show you which languages have the bonuses. I'm a Navy Counselor now but I still have some crypy blood in me :-) Good Luck! Linda

Linda and Hillary, Thank you both for your insights. I have heard only good in terms of Crypt. My only concern now is fixing my credit, and hoping that clears me in terms of security. It hasn't been guaranteed to me. Again, thanks for the feedback! I'm actually exited about crypt, and I never thought that possible.

Hi there, I am currently a cryptologist in the navy. Actually my total job description is Cryptologic Technician Collection (CTR). It is a FAR from boring job. The security check that the governtment does on you is VERY intense, they will go to your hometown, and talk to just about everyone you can think of. In that security check they also ask you questions aboput your life style concerning drinking, drugs, prior convictions, etc. Basically if you lie, you will be caught. After boot camp, you will then go to Pensacola Fl (unless you are a linguist in which you will go to monterey Ca.) for a varied amount of weeks( I had to go for 19 weeks) for intensive training in your job with members of other services. Then you will go to your first Duty Station. The area that you work in is very tightly secured. There are no windows at all in the building, and there are usually marines guarding the area. Being a CT is a very demanding job but the advancement is very good, and believe me, it is never boring. If you have anymore questions, feel free to E-mail me.
