Hi, Jonnie.... I was in the Navy for 20 years... And, tradition is one of the things that Navy does take pride in. Through my 20 years in (1976-1996) the women went through so many uniform changes it was pathetic... Compared to the men. They did go through a few, but not as many... All the other branches of the military the women have basically one or two different uniforms. But, the poor Navy women have a pair of pants and a skirt to match every uniform of the mens... No other branch does this. Plus, the Navy has seasonal uniforms. Like a woman in the winter could wear her black dress uniform, which can be either with pants or a skirt, in the summer she can wear a white skirt that can come with either a cracker jack top or a white shirt or it can be a pair of white pants that has the same white shirt or the cracker jack top... See what I mean... and, in the early 80's they decided to try a thing called SALT AND PEPPERS... which was a black pair of pants with a white shirt... that didn't last very long... Also, when I came in the women wore different uniforms then the men, so they wanted equality and that is what they got... That exact same uniforms as the men... only buttoned on the opposite side... If you decide to join, you get a clothing allowance from the Navy to pay for all these uniforms. and, they issue most of them to you in bootcamp... EN1 K. A. Blackford, Retired USN

Right: tradition. The men get to wear the traditional clothes, and the women...what IS the justification for the women's weird head gear for example? Why not just have a unisex cap for the enlisted and unisex combination hat for officers and CPOs? I just hope I don't wind up having to wear the skirts on a regular basis. I haven't worn a skirt in years.

Hi Jonnie, if it makes you feel any better about this, in the 6 years that I have been in, the only time other than boot camp and "A" school that I have worn any of my skirts has been once and we few women who had to do it raised such a stink it never happened again!
I have been on three different carriers and we never wore a skirt on any of them. I have yet to wear one on shore duty either (I don't think I could find it right now if I had to they are buried so deep in my closet! :o))

:WOMEN ALWAYS HAVE TO WEAR SKIRTS AND HEELS FOR INSPECTIONS (MEN LIKE THE WAY IT MAKES YOU LOOK).
I'VE NEVER EVER BEEN AT A COMMAND WHERE WOMEN DIDN'T HAVE TO AT LEAST WEAR SKIRTS FOR INSPECTIONS. I BELONGED TO AN ADM. COMMAND AND WE STOOD INSPECTION IN THE SOFT MUD AND WE HAD TO WEAR HEELS. WE TRIED TO EXPLAIN TO THE ADM. THAT IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE... HE DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR IT. ONE OF THE WOMEN GOT STUCK IN THE MUD RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM AND WE HAD TO CATCH HER, SHE ALMOST BROKE HER ANKLE...THAT WAS THE LAST TIME WE HAD TO WEAR HEELS.
THEN THERE WERE THE TIMES WE STOOD INSPECTIONS (IN SKIRTS) IN THE HEAT, RAIN, SNOW.......

i am in the navy right now and i never had to wear a skirt. it is an option, you don't have to wear it if you don't want to. also, they are going to do away with them in the near future.
