Hi, I'm a senior in high school & I'm enlisted in the Navy DEP program, I'm scheduled to ship out next June. I was wondering if anyone has had experiance as a Yeoman, since that's what I'm going to be. What kinds of things did you learn in school? Are Yeomans predominantly female? I would really appreciate any feedback or comments. Also, I heard somewhere that being in a squadron is a good way to travel while in the Navy, & that's exactly what I want to do as much as possible-travel. What is a squadron exactly & how do you get to be in one? Again, I'd really appreciate any answers. Thanks!

I wasn't a Yeoman but I can tell you that it is an administrative rate. Computers, paperwork, filing that kind of stuff. I have known lots of male YNs.
As far as a squadron goes, they will have you fill out a "dream sheet" in bootcamp that is where you tell them you want to be stationed in a squadron. If you dont't get a squadron the first time around talk to your detailer when you transfer. Also talk to people about the squadrons they have been in, not all of them are alike and there may be some you want to stay clear of...Good luck.

I was a Yeoman 2nd Class when I was discharged in 1987 and also stationed at a submarine squadron for the first 4 years. The Squadron didn't do much traveling, but I did get to travel going to different schools for training. In Boot Camp you fill out your preferences to where you want to be stationed, but from personal experience, I don't think they really look at them. So, just put down something totally bizarre and see where you get stationed!! I was on active duty for 5 years and I had a great time!! Have fun, get an education and enjoy yourself!!
