Hi. I'm just started my second year of college and in the spring I'm transferring to a 4-yr. What I really want to do is get into UVA and do AFROTC, but UVA is a really hard school to get into and they don't send out acceptance letters until Dec. Since I don't know if I'll get in, I've been thinking about applying to ODU, because they're a part of the Hampton Roads NROTC. I know A LOT about the Air Force but not a lot about the Navy. What are the major differences? The main thing I'm concerned with is being on a ship for extended periods of time. I'm not scared of ships or anything and I'm all up for travel, but I don't want it to have an negative effect on getting married or anything like that. I know there have got to be more differences other than just that.

I know for AFTOTC, I could start next term, and then next summer (before my junior year), I would go to a 6-week field training. Does NROTC kind of work the same way? I know these questions are pretty vague, but ANY advice would really help. Thanks, Lisa

Lisa, There are many differences between the AF and USN. The Navy is not as well funded as the AF so the accomodations aren't as good. The Navy however, is really good about cross training you and giving you more expanded training and experience than the AF.

I think most people would agree with me that the AF is very by the book, (if its not in the book it can't be done). The Navy is all for regulations and by the book, but when things need to get done we find a way to pull together and get it done. I'm not sure but I have heard that it is easier to make rank in the Navy than it is in the Airforce.

With budget cuts it is harder for any of the services to transfer people around the globe and all the services are keeping people is one location and transfering them within that area. As far as boat duty is concerned there are some jobs that are not sea going jobs. I'm not sure about what rates they are in the Officer program but any recruiter would be able to help you with that.

If you have any other questions please feel free to E-Mail me....Terri

I am not sure about the differences between the Air Force and the Navy. However, I do believe that as far as training goes, a 2/c in my battalion switched from AFROTC to NROTC this last spring and she had to do six weeks in Rhode Island over the summer.

I think that would be true in your situation also. Hope that helps and good luck!
