View Full Version : Thinking of Enlisting but not sure

To start I am a 23 year old collge graduate that isn't really sure what to do now that I have a degree. I have been considering enlisting for about 5 months. Probably because a friend tried to get me to enlist when he was sworn in. Once home from common core he got me to go see the recruiter. Today I went to see what the recruiter had to say. I took the practice test and scored a 93. I was told that would allow me any job. So on October 7 I will go take my ASVAB. Still undecided and wanting to check out the Air Force also. I was wondering about basic and how the women are treated, housed, and the general routine. I was lucky enough this summer to go see my friend graduate from Great Lakes so the place wouldn't be a totally strange place. I got to see the recruits doing there jobs for service week and marching on top of the pass in review. Also if somebody can give some information about their jobs. I was thinking about a job in medical. But I would like to hear about other jobs also. Any information that would help me would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Becky- Since you have a degree, you should consider being an officer vs being an enlisted. It is harder to be an officer b/c you have to go through OCS (Navy) or OTS (Air Force), but the benefits are a lot better. As far as basic training goes, I don't know that much. But it doesn't make a lot of sense enlisting with a degree because you'd be at the same "level" as some kid who just graduated high school in June and who doesn't know half as much as you do, and you'd be "under" those who are your age and maybe younger. Just some things to consider. Lisa

Go Navy!! It's just a bit easier to advance thru' the enlisted ranks in the Navy than in the Air Farce. I must admit the housing is better in the Air Farce, as you must remember, you might have to go to sea.
Think carefully about whether to be an Officer or Enlisted. You ARE locked in with a contract as an officer in certain instances and it may be harder to get out of that than as an enlisted. There are also officer accession programs for enlisted personnel including the Warrant Officers program....kinda like being a senior enlisted, but with officer privileges. There are a great deal of web sites to search to get a great deal of information.
Personally, I had more fun as an enlisted, but I must admit, there were a few officers I would have "LOVED" to fraternize with.

Well, I plan to join the Reserves as enlisted (in fact as unrated!) and by the time I join I'll be at least 33, maybe older (I'm 32 now). I've got a college degree and I'm sure it'll be damn awkward being bossed around by someone ten years younger than I am, but I just can't get too excited about being an officer. Near as I can see officers are basically managers, and I want to get my hands dirty, to work with ships. I have plenty of experience in shuffling papers in the civilian world. I want something different from the Navy.
