Hi there, This is probably the wrong place to post this but I don't really know where else to go. I have been with my fiancee fo 5 years and he just recently graduated from boot camp in GReat LAkes. He is now at A school in Pesacola Florida. He called from the airport to let me know that he might be able to come home since school doesn't start until Oct 15. Anyways will he get leave after school, he is an E3 and going for Aviation Maintience. Does everyone have to do a 6 month tour??? I am just frustrated right now because we are trying to set a date but who knows when his leave is going to be!! He also mentioned to me that the NAvy offers civilians jobs, in my case I graduated with a degree in MArine Scienc, can anyne help me with this??? I would appreciate any support and answers you can offer, please e-mail me directly if possible!! Thanks Tracy

Hi Tracy, I know how frustrating this must be for you and your fiancee. As you've probably discovered by now, the needs of the Navy come before the wishes of the sailor, but there are ways to make your lives a little easier. Your fiancee doesn't have much say in anything before completing AIT but after being assigned to their first duty station, sailors can request leave whenever they want, as long as the Navy can spare them (i.e. there's not a war in progress or everyone else hasn't already booked off that same week). What he will have to do is speak to his CO and ask for some leave time -- they try to be as accommdating as possible, especially when it comes to important events like weddings. There is also a lot of paperwork to be done (for benefits, housing, etc) so he will need some time to sort all of that out with administration before getting married. I've probably made it sound more complicated than it is....I don't mean to scare you! I'm sure you'll get it worked out in no time. It's fun to plan a wedding so go ahead, just be flexible with your plans until he is more settled in his post. Oh -- I almost forgot....the Navy DOES hire civilians for certain things, I believe that for a job in your field you would apply through the Dept of Defense (but don't quote me on that) or if it's a base job you would apply directly to them. You'd probably be better off joining yourself, though -- as an officer you'd have it made (plus they'd pay for you to do a masters if you wanted to). Good luck with everything, Jenn
