: I've been in the navy for just over a year now so if you need any advice
: about what to expect in basic training, job fields, (esp CTR) just ask me
: either on here or send me an email and i'll answer your questions as best
: as i can or will refer you to someone who can.
Could you tell me what to expect from bot camp? I haven't enlisted yet, but I want to be as prepared as possible. I've been hearing about 30 second showers. Is that true for the entire time in boot camp? Also, what kind of stuff should I take and what shouldn't I take? How can I prepare myself for the physical aspect and the mental? Thanks in advance!

Sharon- The showers aren't 30 seconds, they are about 2 minutes long. (at least in my divison they were.) it all depends on who your RDC is. (people in charge) My advice to you for bringing items would be, white cotton underware, shampoo conditioner, bar soap (liquid is not allowed) a good pair of running shoes, because they will provide the most hideaous looking shoes if you don't bring your own, a small address book, paper, stamps and a couple envelopes. Everything else will be provided for you from the antiperspirant to the white T-shirts. If i were you, to prepare, start running a quarter of a mile and work your way up to a mile and a half (that's the required length, and if your 18, run it in 13:30) start working on your pushups and your situps. I would alternate running every other day with jumping jacks or something that's not as aerobic as running. do pushups and situps every day though, because you will get dropped. it's a fact of life in basic training, but it's not that bad. I couldn't do a single pushup before i got in the navy, and now i can do about 70 in two minutes. Also, it's best if you know how to swim. otherwise you will be required to take swimming lessons by no so friendly instructors. if you know how to do a right face, left face and about face, before you get in, you can get into the performance divisons which are the best way to go. (i wasn't in one, but i can tell you, they have it much easier during basic training.) That's about all i can come up with. let me know if you have any more questions. -diana

I'm not concerned with the running. I was a cross country runner, so a mile and a half in 18 minutes is nothing for me. It's the strength part I'm worried about. I've been doing push-ups and sit-ups every day, a few times a day. I'll get on the floor and start doing them during commercials, when I get off the computer, before I go to bed, when I wake up, basically before and after I do anything. Right now I can only do 10 push-ups at a time and 20 sit-ups at a time. What goal should I be aiming for? I've seen requirements for women, but are they the minimum? Because I don't want to aim for the minimum, I want to aim for what would be considered excellent. By the way, I'm 20. Is there anything else I can do to build up my strength? Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all these, it's a huge help!

Sharon, if i were you, I would aim at doing 10 good pushups (like legs together, butt not sticking up straight in the air.)for one night, and slowly, add an extra pushup in every day. Within a month, you will be up to 40. Be sure to take your time. and since your 20, the minimum for pushups is 14, but i would try to get up to 35-40. That would be considered somewhere around an excellent for you.
