I was there in 69 and I didn't see a garden, and I didn't hear a party going on.

1969 - Parris Island, SC -**Woman Marine Corps Basic Training.**Did anyone else look forward to the "Garden Party" like I did?**No one explained that even if I was in the South, a garden party did not involve Mint Julips and real gardens when you were in boot camp.

MCRD PI 1972 - Explanation of a Garden Party was not given to recruits - although we were expected to fully participate. Nothing like getting out in the great outdoors! Oh those memories.

The Humid Swamp smell hung over the barracks. When Sgt Connelly handed me a sickle, I thought she was joking. But we did get to be outside without having to march and haul road horses!

Hey, we had garden parties way back in 1959 we didn't have the luxury of bug spray to protect us from insects - we had to grin and bear the assaults but due to the nightly bug spraying there really weren't too many biting insects - We did a good job of cleaning up - yes the spanish moss, the incredible humidity we were tough & crazy with fear! We had the best food at our messhall I will never forget excuse me memories flood in and i digress but the garden parties were real!!

Oh dear Connelly was still there with you also. She was a hoot wasn't she. She retired back in late 70's. I had her as my Gy at HDqrs MC, Henderson Hall, Arlington, VA in mid 70's. If she's still alive she's living somewhere in MA.
