Hi, my name is LeeAnn and I am 25. I am am about to go to boot camp in late August and I still haven't chosen my mos. I am interested in the intel field, but my recruiter won't seem to tell me much about it. I have been asking him about a couple different jobs and he keeps giving me the run around. He said that I would have to put "open field" and let the planners down at Meps figure it out. Is this true? My husband is a former Marine (he was in about 10 yrs ago when he was 18) and he said he remembers guys who had "open field" on their papers and after boot camp they just received any billet that had an opening. I don't want this to happen. If anyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You in advance.A motivated but confused Devil Dog Pup-LeeAnn

Yes... it's true that you could end up in a field totally exciting. But not very likely. There are indeed too many fields being pushed and trying to get filled by the Corps.Chances are... you could end up in one of those and not one deemed qualified for by boot camp tests.I would not recommend you go in OPEN contract.Don't let them decide your future!YOU DO IT!Pick something you want... you'd enjoy...**or something to give you a career and opportunities in the future! You DON'T Need previous experience like in an outside job.THEY TRAIN YOU!You can always change your MOS later if you don't like it or can't hack it... it's not impossible to do.(but not always easy either)Your Recruiter should give you more facts! If not... go elsewhere!**ask ANOTHER RECRUITER, even if in another town!**Check out the list!**There is a lot to choose!Give it serious thought. And GOOD LUCK!

LeeAnn, Whatever you do, DON"T go in on an open contract!!!**They will put you in whatever MOS is short at the time.**Make that recruiter show you**in writing whatever he is telling you.**If you are really interested in the intell field, you have to put your foot down and tell him, otherwise--you are letting him take charge of your life.**See, he has a quota he has to fill every month--you are really nothing more than a number to him.**Even if he's a nice guy, at this point he's thinking of his career--not yours.**Good luck, and remember--noone is going to care more about you and your goals than you are.**

All I can say is that you should definitely take the Intell field.**It is the fastest promoting field in the Corps today!**The school for the 0200 (Intell)Field is in Dam Neck, Virginia in Virginia Beach.**Tell your recruiter that you refuse to leave for boot camp until he finds you an opening in the Intell field.**If you can try to get 0231 which is Intelligence Specialist.**If you spend enough time in the Corps you will definitely do well in the CIA or other Government agency after getting out of the Corps.**Don't go in as OPEN CONTRACT!! You will end up with a crappy MOS if you do!**When you end up at MEPS to ship out for Parris Island and your contract says OPEN or undesignated MOS......DON"T GO!!**If they say you have to....they are lying!!**You don't have to go if you haven't been sworn in for the second time(which happens the day you ship out).**The reason your recruiter is giving you the run around is because he has a quota to meet and he could care less what job you get...just as long as you join.**Trust me.**All I can say is when you get to PI, you have to stay MOTIVATED!!**Don't give up at anything and remember that the DI's don't hate you..it's their job to be mean and to treat you bad.**Good luck and Semper Fi!Sincerely-****A former PI boot camp resisdent discharged due to Lyme's Disease.** ONCE A MARINE.....ALWAYS A MARINE!!

I was in the same sort of trouble you are (were?) in.**I enlisted on open contract and was extremely worried about it.**I also wanted Intel.**My recruiter WAS up front with em, but only after I bugged him and bugged him about it.**Eventually I took the DLAB test which is required for Signals Intel.**It was very difficult but I passed.**The day after I passed the test I got a call from my recruiter.**He told me that he had just been notified that there was in opening in Signals Intelligence WITH an enlistment bonus.**He said I was very fortunate because there weren't any openings before that.**I discovered that if there hadn't been an opening I probably wouldn't have gotten the MOS!**And I had been led to believe that I could have any MOS GUARANTEED that I wanted (if I qualified).**Only pure luck got me a guaranteed MOS.**If I had known what I know now, I would have forced the issue before every signing enlistment papers.Tell your recruiter what MOS(s) you want.**Ask him to show them to you in his book with the listings.**Ask him if you qualify.**Then find out which one he can GUARANTEE for you.I ship out next Monday, wish me luck.**I wish you luck too. =)**I will turn 25 while I'm there.**I was worried that I would be uncomfortable with the age differences in boot camp as most join right out of high school.**I have been reassured that if anything I will have an advantage. *crossing fingers*good luck!Dana

: **I agree. If you go in on an 'open field' you could end up any where.Get it in writing what field you want. I went in 'open' and got administration instead of the field I wanted. Most fields are hard to get into if they have people reenlisting soon in that field. Your Recruiter is interested in numbers not your future, only you can control that part of your life. If you dont get your 1st Mos pick a field where lateral move can help you get closer to it. (A lateral move is moving from one field to another in the same specialty)** Good Luck Devil Pup and if you need more info write to me at my e-mail addy.
