I am a 17 year old female with a dream of becoming a marine.**I have grown upseeking out people in, retired from, or associated with the services.**I ranwith guys for weeks before they left for boot camp, sat up hours listening tothem talk about their experiences, and longed to be a part of it.**I havedecided to join the Marine Corps.**Several people join the military for the tuition, job security, because theirfriends are doing it, family tradition, or various other reasons.** I want thechallenge.**From my research it is my understanding that the Marine Corp isthe most challenging physically, and mentally as the fitness standards are thehighest, and the chances for promotion are smaller than other branches.**If myinformation is incorrect, please let me know. Now, my real point to this letter is to ask wise women of the military aboutoposition from the faimily.**My family wants me to go to college, get adegree, and do anything except join the military.**When I was little all Iwanted to do was please them, so when they shunned the military idea I lookedfor "better" ideas.**Now it's coming down to graduation.**I don't want to goto full time college, but I want the degree.**Not to avoid the work, I welcomethat, but the thought bores me.**My idea is to go join the Marines and takenight classes. While my family means a lot to me, and I value their opinoins, I cannot ignoremy dream.**I'm sure that if I go in alone and sign at 18, they will back me inthe long run.**Mainly my concern is having someone there who knows their stuffwhen I sign in order to get the best benifits availible to me.**This is underthe advice of a friend who is in already.**I want to join, but I don't want tobe reckless in the process.**A gentleman who is a close friend of the familyhas been through the process several times and I asked for his help, but hedoesn't want to go against my family.**What now?**Is there anyone out therewho went through a similar situation?**Can you tell me your story so that Ican consider your way of handling it and possibly learn from others mistakesbefore I go off and make them myself?Thank you, and please send any info, comments, or suggestions to:
