Hey everybody! I am about to ship in 13 days and am very excited about this. I was a DEPer for about 6 months so I feel I am as ready as I'll be for this new adventure, however I do have some questions. In the DEP booklet they gave me it says to bring white 6 (i belive) white sports bras, as well as 7 or so pairs of cotton white underwear, if the guys are issue this why aren't we? or does it just have to do with sizing and such? Also if you only get time to shave on Sundays but can't keep a razor, does your Drill Instructor keep them for you? Also when you make that PX call during recieving do you get to buy shampoo and soap or is it issued? Basically I'm just wondering about the hygine I know most of the time you get to take care of it is during what little free time you have so any advice would be great! Thank you!

You are issued sports btas and underwear when you first arrive. They suggest you bring your own because you may not loke the fit of the underwear and sports bras so it is up to you. I personally liked the sports bras that we were issued and I still wear mine some 6 years later. The underwear, if I remember correctly are Fruit of the Loom briefs. So if you don't want to wear granny panties then bring your own, but no thongs. Also you can save yourself some time by writing your last name in the inside band of your underwear and sportsbras. You are issued razors in your hygiene kit. The DI will take these up as soon as you receive them and they will be kept in the DI hut. All you have to do is ask for one (in the proper way of course) and then the DI will give you one. You will have to return it and throw it in the trash in front of the DI. This is so you don't have recruits trying to commit suicide with a razor ( believe me it has been attempted as well as many other strange thins). Bring your own shampoo. You do not get issued any and you do not get your first PX call until training day 8, which is a week or so after you have been there. They do issue soap and a soap and toothbrush holder. If you have long hair take what you need to pull it up so that you can not see what is holding it (bobby pins, ponytail holders, gel, etc.) You can take a brush, hairdryer etc. Trust me the DI's want you clean as much as you want to be clean.

Everything that you take that can be shared, (Shampoo, gel, hairspray...) will be. It will become community gear. It will be stored in a gear locker and will only be used during you square away time. That is normally about an hour after evening chow, mailcall, and exercises. Everything gets issued to you. From stamps, writing paper, envelopes, sock, tennie runners, etc. You can take make up but you will not be able to use it until family day. That's almost at the end. It will be stored and not be able to use until they say so. You will not be able to wash you hair during a PT shower. All you will do is wash you important parts and thats it. Square away time is when you can do that. You must use the deep sinks in the laundry room. They don't want the girls clogging up the drains in the head. Shaving you can do during square away time, any night. The DI's will have you on the quarter deck and ask if any recruit needs a razor. At that point you can request to use one. You must return it to the person incharge of counting them. They must see you deposit it in the bag. Safety is alway first. Take a VERY SMALL bag. All I took was 5 "white panties", "6 white or gray" sports bras, some make up, and a very small address book. You will have a tough time trying to carry a big bag when standing on the yellow footprints. You will NOT go to the PX during receiving. It will be a while until you do that. The platoon that was there before yours will have already stocked up the gear locker. You will have to do that also before you leave. Well Devil pup, have a great. The only way to find out exactly how it is going to be...you'll have to experience it for your self. It is a different experience for everyone. I could go into detail, but I wouldn't have enough space. Good Luck.
