Yes, this is my main concern, too. I tried to search the Web for resources but so far found nothing but this posting.

I am interested in joining the reserves in Ontario, Canada. I have a fewconcerns, the answers to which would convince me to either join, or not.My main concern, which may sound silly, but, nonetheless, of extremeimportance to me, is the question of nutrition in the army. Beingstrictly vegetarian, would I have a problem here, as being healthy is,of course, so important. Does the army make provisions for this?

Most military messes offer a large choice of different foods so eating a vegitarian meal is no problem on base. In the field, however, it is another story, most, but not all, of the field rations have meat in them. My unit has several vegitarian who say they have no problem while on base. In the field they swap rations with others when ever possible. This is not satisfactory for most. The short answer is that No, the military does not, as yet, make any allowances for being a vegitarian.

I have been in the army for 7 years now and I am an on and off vegetarian. I decided to become an ovo-lacto vegetarian and now I am deployed. I must say the army offers very little in the way of vegetarian meals. They are quick to point to the salad bar. at my post it only offers 2 kinds of protien (eggs and beans) and sometimes not even these i have been here for 5 months and so far I have only seen them offer one strickty vegetarian main dish (veggie lasagna) and it wouldnt even have served vegans because it was made with cheese. This is a serious problem I feel the military needs to address but they are very slow toward change. If decide to join it will be difficult finding the right amount of the nutrients you need but if you are determined you should be able to make it. Best Luck
