Help!**I am doing a debate about women being included in the draft.**I am against it.**I don't have any info supporting my belief and if any of you do please let me know and soon.**Thanks much

After 25 years without a draft, I doubt you'll find much popular support for ANYONE being drafted. When the draft ended in the 70s, the decision was made to require only men to register. This of course prompted lawsuits, and one of these was eventually heard by the Supreme Court (in 81 or 82 - I forget which year). The case involved a question of whether requiring only men to register violated their right to equal protection under the law. The Supreme Court ruled that since the goal of the draft was primarily to fill combat positions, from which women were excluded by statute and/or policy, the equal protection clause was not violated. Since that time the statutory restrictions on women serving in combat positions have been repealed. Now it's just a matter of policy, and that may not be sufficient to uphold the exclusion of women from draft registration. Even if women are required to register, I don't think the public or the military will support a draft in the near future.
