View Full Version : Women should have the same opportunities as men!

In my own personal opinion, I believe we, as women, should have the right to choose if we want to take part in combat. I'm a High School Senior from North Dakota currently working on a debate for my Honors course and I am currently enlisted as a DEP member in the US ARMY, and I have run across a few good points.

1. Women are said to be equal? Well, then we should be allowed to at least try anything a man does.

2. If a female wants to prove herself, why not train as hard as the male? I think that we should have to have to run as fast and do as many pushups and situps.

3. Since the males have to join a draft board at 18, then I think that females should have to do the same.

You don't have to agree with me these are just my opinions as a female and as a military member.

Hi. I can only give my opinion as a female (not a military member yet). Sure everyone must choose and do whatever job he/she is qualified for, or can pass all needed for the training (military), yes, I disagree with the politics of some countries to have double standards for male and female recruits it's BS, either you can or can't do the job, and, for your info, history is a living proof that women DID same things as men ie. fight in wars (same positions), and, yes, it's unfair to draft only males in case of war, but this all concept of women in combat (in USA) is new, and many people have lot of prejudece, so, until they really think well, for some of them, co-ed military will still look like a joke. Wish you a good luck in Army, have a great future, hope my opinion helps. Bye...

I agree a 100% with what your saying. Women have proven over and over they have what it takes to succeed in combat. Recently, we had women fighter pilots flying mission in the gulf, and its past time. I think women can succeed in all positions, infantry included.

I agree with you, so long as the standards are kept the same, and that includes push-ups. Women who seek infantry positions must be able to do EVERYTHING as well as the men. I believe that we'll see the day when women have infantry jobs. Those first women will have it tough, but I believe as long as we don't get any "Shannon Faulkners" in the first wave, people will accept it in time. I'm in the Army DEP too and am planning to go WOFT. Females can fly combat in the Army so who knows, maybe they'll open infantry to females during my career. I personally won't take it because I want to fly, but if others want to they should go for it. When do you go to Basic? Where? I'm going to Ft. Sill on Sept. 2nd. Good Luck! Michelle

:Hi, My name's Robin and I was in the Army for 8 years before getting out in July 98. Being a photojournalist while I was in I had MANY opportunities to talk to men, especially Infantrymen, about the whole issue. My personal opinion is if a woman can do everything the man can -- more power to her. But there are some issues you have to consider; the biggest being, will the infantrymen accept the women? From my personal experience, it will take a long time and then you will always have those who will never accept a woman. There's also the "woman intruding on the male-bonding" thing. Believe me, I've heard this more than once snf I was just a journalist trying to give these Infantrymen some recognition for their hard work. I could go on for days about the pros and cons, but the bottom line is: if they can hack it go for it, but expect to be made to feel left out and not "one of the guys." I don't want to sound negative because I loved my time in the Army and if it wasn't for my circumstances I would still be in, but this is reality.
