To begin with, the Air Force mission is aerial combat and aerial combat support. To be a pilot, you must be an officer. You can become an officer by going to ROTC at a college, attending OTS after you get your degree or via the AF Academy. To get into the Academy, you must be accepted. It is a long and somewhat hard process. To be a pilot, #1-You must have a pilot's license prior to flight training. #2-You must pass a Flying Class 1 physical, which consist of more than the average medical physical. #3-Above all, to be a Fighter Pilot...You must be the BEST OF THE BEST! Only top notch pilots (academically and practical performance) are chosen to fly fighters, the rest get cargo, recon, and bombers. Then you will have to pass the Fighter Training depending on which aircraft you are assigned to fly.

The key to being a fighter pilot (any USAF pilot)is getting to Undergraduate or Specialized Undergraduate Pilot training. All of the below information is good except for #1 "you must have a pilot's license prior to pilot training."
According to AFCAT 36-2223, which is the Air Force catalog of formal schools. To attend UPT/SUPT you must have completed USAF Academy PIP or the Flight Screening Course. To get into the flight screening course you must have a AFOQT composite score of 25 and a combined pilot/nav score of 50 (this can be explained by your local recruiter). Falure to complete this course would disqualify you from UPT/SUPT.
I would have to say the hardest part of this whole slot is getting that pilot slot at UPT. It is very competitive these days, they are hard to come by. I wish you the best of luck in the persuit of your dream.
