Hi,

I am scheduled to leave for officer basic in November and I am also a bit weary about the physical requirements. I can give you a few tips on running and training though. I have been running for about 5 years, I wouldn't consider myself a "runner", more of a jogger, but I do have a few tips that might help.

There are two things that you need to consider, speed and endurance. The speed is probably the least of your worries at this point but you will still have to work on that before you leave. I suggest setting a distance goal, doing 3 miles 5-6 times a week (or whatever fits your abilities at this time). Concentrate on the miles and not on the actual running. If you run, jog, walk, just do the miles. Every time you go out just try to run more and walk less even if it is an extra minute more, it will add up. Intervals are great! Walk a minute, jog a minute, run a minute etc. etc. until your miles are in. This will also help with your speed in the long run, just remember that it isn't supposed to be easy, you should be breathing hard and sweating within a few minutes. When you are able to do the total mile goal, you can continue doing intervals just make them harder - jog-run-sprint-jog-run-sprint etc. Even though you should be working hard don't fight your body too much. If you are feeling tired and seem to be dragging take a day off, your body needs time to recover and replenish its strength. You also don't want to injure yourself before you even get to basic!!

I don't have much advice about sit ups and push ups except to just do them, and do lots of them. If you have a hard time doing a lot of push ups you can do "girl" push ups to get the endurance and then do regular pushups to gain strength. If you can weight train upper body that will also help.

Let me know if you have any other questions, Stacey
