Gabriella,
Yeah a rather easy question the exercise you should do to get better at the pushup is you guessed it the push-up. The only way to get better at an exercise is to do it no matter how much you hate it. Most folks if they have trouble doing an exercise avoid it and thus never get better when the opposite is what you have to do.

Thank you for your response. Naturally, I will practice more push ups. However, I was wondering if perhaps I should lift weights to build up more muscle strength? I have never really been fit before and am quite new to exercise, and eating properly is a rather new experience for me as well. I didn't mean for my question to sound a little foolish, I realize now it may have been. I still appreciate your answer and thank you.

Of course you should lift weights.. it builds muscle and bone mass. Doing shoulder, chest, tricep, and back exercises will make a complete workout to assist with increasing the # of push-ups.. but doing push-ups themselves is a complementary way to increase the #'s too- make sure you have the right form too, otherwise they will be harder.
The best way to begin is using the modified form of push-ups - 'girlie' style, w/ you knees crossed and balancing yourself and your push-up on your knees.. lessens the weight for the beginning set. They you can work up to the traditional style. AND OF COURSE my favorite- diamonds :)
