It seems like a lot of people complain of getting stress fractures. What is the best way of preventing them and what exactly causes them?

Stress fractures are basically small cracks and splinters that form on the bone tissue usually in the lower legs (tibia and fibia). They are caused by the bones in the legs absorbing the shock effects from the feet striking the surface when running or marching with heavy loads. The shock produced I believe is well over something like 600lbs of pressure from the feet hitting the hard surface of roads etc. So if you run a lot the bone starts to crack just like wood would do if you hit it with a hammer enough times. The best way to prevent this from occuring is to have shoes and boots with good insoles and soles to absorb some of the shock effect when the feet strike the surface. Women face this problem more so then men because women do not take a lot of calcium, it is basically the same problem that causes osteoporosis in women as they get older the bones simply are more brittle.
