: Do you have to go through the gas chamber in Air Force Basic training? The answer would be yes every military service, FBI, CIA even police forces train using a gas (cs) chamber of some sort, as are most fire departments now as well due to these being the first responders in a terroristic gas attack. Jeeze it is not bad so your nose runs a bit, eyes tear and you cough and skin may get a slight burning sensation. Much better to do this now then find yourself in someplace like Iraq with scud missiles coming in and you don't know how to use the darn gas mask and wind up dead.

The more one sweats in training the less one bleeds in combat.

Yes Kat you will have to go through the gas chamber. But do not be afraid of it, it really is a blast. It stinks like the devil, and you will cry croc tears, but your squad will be right there with you going through the same thing with you. Afterwards you will laugh about it for years, believe me you won't forget it. Fortunately I had a leaky mask so I did not have to stay as long as the other girls did, but I got as much as they did - Almost.

Will tell you a funny story, when I was at Lackland on my re-enlistment my barracks was across the road from the range. Well this one night the guys were having night exercises, they set off the tear gas to close to the road, guess which way the strong Texas wind was blowing. Three of us raced through the barracks closing windows, but we still went through the gas chamber a second time. A never to be forgotten experience and I still laugh about both, they are really things to tell your grandchildren.

Don't worry it is not as bad as you fear, fear is your worst enemy.

I went through Air Force Basis in the summer of 1996, and at that time we didn't go through the gas chamber. Actually, I didn't think anybody did...I am not sure when the people who also responded went through. However, I did go in the gas chamber for my tech school at Brooks AFB, for Bioenvironmental Engineering. Is is possible that trainees go through the chamber as part of warrior week??

I went through basic training Nov of 99. We did not go thru any type of gas chamber. THey held something in front of our faces while we had gas masks on and asked us if we smelled anything. I didn't. (which meant I had my mask on correctly). Basic training is a mind game. If you have a strong mind, the physical aspect will be a piece of cake.
