: I would appreciate any advice regarding a problem I have (I'll try to keep
: this short and concise). In August I took the oath of enlistment to the
: USMC. I am currently set to leave for recruit training after the beginning
: of the year. I have taken all the tests and qualify for some sort of
: cryptoliguistic field job, something I've always beeninterested in. I know
: that this is something I'd love to study and know that the military is the
: best way for me to get the education and life experience, and until
: recently I've had no regrets. And here's the problem...for the last 7 or 8
: years I have experienced seasonal depression that has a huge impact on my
: life from October until March. During the summer months I am fine and
: positive (as I was when I made the decision to enlist). Just recently I
: have begun to feel winter descend. During these times I begin to abuse
: alcohol, prescription and non prescription drugs (not illegal drugs), and
: feel self destructive and suicidal. During enlistment paperwork I left out
: the fact that I have been on anti-depressants for varying amounts of time
: throughout the last 5 years (not currently) and the various
: psychiatrists/psychologists I've consulted. My questions are namely: 1).
: Do I even have any options to not enter the service (with or without
: repercussions of the omitted information)? 2). Does it seem as though it
: is in the best interest of both the military and myself to NOT enter? I
: feel (now) that it might be detrimental to myself to join, and that if I
: can't perform up to my own highest levels for half a year, it is not
: beneficial to the USMC either. I know that whatever decision I make now
: will hold...either I join and am there for the good and bad for the next 5
: years, or I admit how I feel and will most likely lose my chance to take
: advantage of this opportunity. I would very much appreciate any feedback
: anyone might have to help me solve this dilemma. You can email me direct
: at dcfmoose811@aol.com . Thank you in advance. --Diane

Diane - assuming this posting is legitimate, the fact that you neglected to inform officials of your past health problems is a criminal act in nature. If you decide to enter into the USMC, you will (not if) be eventually found out and subject to possible legal actions. It's up to you, but our national defense rests upon our members' stability.
