I've been considering joining the Airforce lately and I have a couple questions. I have also considered the Navy and I know lots about it so Im trying to compare. If anyone wants to tell why they think Airforce is a better choice, for any reason, I would be glad to hear it. My questions about the Airforce are: Is there much oppertunity for travel in the first 4 years? What are some Airforce carrers that are in demand in the civillian workforce? I'm interested in X-ray tech, how long and where is schooling, is it a very competative field, is there much demand? I'm looking to get job experience, travel, fair treatment, and hopefully a little fun out of whatever branch I choose, so any info. or advice on this stuff in the Airforce would be helpful.

Hello, Yes there is opportunity to travel in your first 4 years. I'm not sure where the schooling for x-ray techs are, or even if there is one (maybe on the job training). Or the AF might also be going to civilians for this job. You need to ask a recruiter. You can "volunteer" for certain states or bases, or even overseas bases. Being a first-termer, your chances would be a little better than the average person for traveling. Say for example your first base is in North Dakota, which you don't like, you could volunteer for Germany, Europe, or Asia, and possibly leave N. Dakota after 1 year. Then again, some people get stuck at a bad base, and they can't leave there no matter how hard they try (it also depends on your job, the more common it is, the easier it is to get stationed at a different base). Then that person gets out of the AF after their 4 years is up, saying they could never go anywhere. It just depends. You may get Florida or Hawaii your first job. I'd recommend the medical field, as you would gain experience from it, then you could use that experience in the civilian world. Good luck!

Tammy,

The Air Force offers an extensive course in xray tech. Usually you end up at two stateside bases for training before you are assigned to a permanent base. The medical field is a good field. Sometimes individuals ended up staying at the smae base they ended their training at. I just retired from the Air Force so if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help from the Air Force at least.

I work in a major Air Force medical center. I know many 'rad-techs' and it's a great field to go into, especially with the Air Force paying for it. Your tech training will begin in Wichita falls, Tex at Shepard AFB, phase II will be at another base. By the time all that is done and you get certified, you will be facing getting out or staying in, but my the choices you'll have at that point!!! Get a GUARANTEED job...in writing before signing up. I can't stress that enough. Good luck hon!!
