I am a 25 yr old German with a Green Card and I am thinking about joining the Air Force. I would like to get advice from women in the military (possibly non-U.S. citizens, too). I am a little worried because of my age and not being a native English speaker. My English is good, but I heard that mostlikely older recruits will be flight leaders and I am worried that (if that would really happen to me) I would have problems to understand certain military terms and therefore would have problems to follow orders or such things. Also I am wondering about the different jobs. I am interested in a bunch of things like linguist, air traffic controller, broadcaster, finance office. I would greatly appreciate any kind of information on those jobs (general tasks, length of tech school, and so on.)

I went into the USAF aged 25 as a foreigner with a Green card. The only problem was that you are very restricted as far as the career fields you can choose from. You mentioned Linguist, I know that one is closed to non-citizens because of the security issues. Also you cannot be stationed overseas permanently, and in my career field I also could not go overseas on TDY (shorter tours) - but that might be different in other jobs. There are some good career fields that you can choose from though.
Don't worry about basic training - they don't just automatically pick the oldest person to be flight leader. Honestly, I think that if they suspect your language will be a slight obstacle when it comes to all the shouting and orders, they probably would pick someone else. I was self conscious about my accent too but everyone's in it together, from so many different backgrounds.
Good luck!!

Hi ladies, I'm a 25 yr old police officer in the Washington DC Metro area and I'm considering joining the AF as a Reserve. I have been sorta thinking about this for a few years now and just fairly recent I have started to make definite moves toward my goal. I still have yet to sit down with a recruiter. Well I did have a preliminary interview over the phone where I was outright "disqualified" because of asthma, the recruiter didn't even have the professionalism to help me or advise me on what I should do or what my options were. He didn't even return any of my numerous phone calls. By the way, I was never medically diagnosed with asthma, so it was an assumption for most of my childhood. So as of Nov. 27, 2000 I had my full physical exam in preparation for this ordeal and asthma was medically ruled out through breath and blood testing (happy to say). In short, I don't have confidence in this same recruiter and would like to know how I can come in contact with another in my area. Unfortunately, it seems that this one recruiter is assigned to my whole general area and I'm afraid that I'll be stuck with him regardless. What should I do??? Also is there a way to prepare for the ASVAB?? I would like to score as high as possible on this exam but not sure what to look out for or even how to prepare for it.
All help will be greatly appreciated. Please contact me via email: jmuw99@hotmail.com or AOL instant messanger: Takeit344
Thanks, Jacinta
Ps. the closest base in my area would be Andrews AFB and Bowling Green AFB, I think.

Hi! I joined the AF a few months ago and I am leaving in April 01. I signed up as a financial management apprentice. The Tech school is ten weeks long and is at Sheppard AFB in Northern Texas. If you go to the www.airforce.com site and go to the Jobs section you can look through all of the jobs and there descriptions and tech school information is on there too (I believe).
