Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me what Officer Training School is like? I am debating on whether I want to go into the AF as enlisted or as an officer and I would really like to know what OTS is like. Is it easier than enlisted boot camp? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I did not go through OTS. I recruited for OTS and put many officers in the Air Force that have been through training. OTS is 12 weeks versus 6 weeks of enlisted. You get yelled at harder as enlisted. For OTS, their tone is not so harsh with the Officer Trainees. Go to this web site to get more information on OTS.

airforce.com for basic training for enlisted

As a note, don't choose which way to go based on the easiest basic training. Pick the one you are most qualified for and your needs. If you have a 4 year degree, than you can go OTS as long as we need your major at the time. I am still in the recruiting business and currently, we are only accepting applications for Navigators and Pilots. We will be considering non-technical majors in Jul. If you only have a couple of years of college under your belt and you are ready for something new and maybe have the Air Force pay for the rest of your education, then enlisting is a better option.

Don't forget about ROTC or the Academy!!! Go to afrotc.com

Good scholarship opportunities for those currently in high school.

Good Luck.

www.airforceots.com

works for most people w/ general questions.. I've seen some trivial muck about bringing cameras, what socks to bring and the like.. as if no one has done anything w/o preparing first..

anyways- you can find most of your questions answered on here by those who want to go, havent gone, wont ever go and some who have.

Good Luck

I can tell you that people who go through OTS do not always go through their Tech school before going to thier first base. We have a Lt working with us who has no knowlege of his job and very little knowlege of the Air Force. Coming in as enlisted you can ease your way into the military life instead of being trown into the wolves and having your enlisted counterparts hating you for your lack of knowlege. Although if you are familiar with military customs and courtesies and are willling to be patient and not jump into your job before tech school OTS may be a better option. You should talk to someone who is a cadet and follow through with them.

That is the job of S/NCOs- to 'train' their Lt's to be the type of officer they want to work for and lead in the future. Complaining about a Lt who doesnt know about the wiles of the AF is useless- take them under your wing, respectfully guide them through- (they should be WANTING to know their job and asking question) and then you can let them go about their business. A good 1st Sgt can help them w/ discipline, a Chief with the section and the S/NCOs with daily operations.

Going enlisted is a good way, however its not the only way to learn about the AF. Plenty of officers have had great enlisted personnel to teach them and mentor them (as they should!)

Cadet- ROTC
OTS- Officer Trainee and you cant follow them (unless they write during their training weeks)

use the website offered because it provides in-depth prep and expectation information for any prospects.

Going through tech.school is not going to give the Lt a holistic concept of their AFSC- just an overview... the real job comes at the duty station where they're surrounded by the specialists and the officers who've done the job before them. Its an awesome responsibility to be an enlisted person- not only do you do your job- you're also molding the future of the AF and its leaders...

I'm a non-prior 1Lt and couldnt have done my job w/o my S/NCO and my Shirt!
