To recently deployed military mothers who at the time of deployment had an adolescent child:
I would like to invite you to take part in a research study on Military Mothers of Adolescent Children: An Exploratory Pilot Study of Experiences Related to Deployment, which has been funded by the University of New Mexico, College of Nursing. The Primary Investigator conducting this research is Lieutenant Colonel Mona Ternus, a US Air Force Reserve nurse. Dr. Ternus is also an associate professor at University of New Mexico, with experience as a deployed military mother with an adolescent child.
The purpose of this pilot study is to identify issues military mothers of adolescent children may experience associated with deployment. The specific aims of this study are to describe the health of military mothers of adolescents after deployment; identify issues for military mothers’ of adolescents associated with deployment; and examine the relationship between military mothers’ health, deployment characteristics, family structure, support during deployment, and adolescent behaviors.
If you deployed between Jan 03-Jun 05 and at the time of deployment were a parent of an adolescent child aged 12-18, you are eligible to participate in this survey. Your participation in this study would be to answer questions in an anonymous survey. Based on the responses of all participants, data gathered will be analyzed, and then summary information would be published that can be used to improve health care related to deployment and strengthening the mother–adolescent relationship during and after deployment.
There are 60 questions on this survey. You can expect to see questions that are check boxes and short fill-in-the-blank, as well as open-ended, questions, where you can write in as little or as much as you want. All data are compiled by a secure server, and researchers only see raw data. Your personal information will not be recorded and, therefore, will not be connected to any of your responses. All of your answers will be anonymous. Completing this survey is completely voluntary, and you may quit at any time. An informed consent document is listed as the first question on the survey, and you will need to check that you have been provided this information to continue with the survey. Thank you emails and certificates of participation may be requested within the survey.
This survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes (depending on your level of involvement and the depth of your answers), and your time investment in this project is appreciated. Please respond by clicking on the hyperlink below, completing the Web survey, and selecting the “Submit Survey” button at the end of the survey.
