The Defense Department would like you to remove that gritty lump of tobacco from your mouth and chuck it in the trash. If you do it Feb. 18, you’ll have company.That’s the date of the Great American Spit Out, which DoD is promoting as part of its larger anti-tobacco campaign, “Quit Tobacco — Make Everyone Proud.”Smokeless tobacco is a legitimate threat to the health of U.S. troops. An estimated 17 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds use smokeless tobacco, the DoD reports. Snuff and chewing tobacco contain higher concentrations of nicotine and include 28 known carcinogens.
