A Marine died Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the Defense Department reported.

Lance Cpl. Noah M. Pier, 25, of Charlotte, N.C., was a machine gunner assigned to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii-based 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in November, joining Regimental Combat Team 7.

Pier is the third Marine killed this week in volatile Helmand. It was unclear whether fighting was part of the assault on the town of Marjah.

Pier joined the Corps in August 2007 and previously deployed to Iraq.
