Two Marines died Friday while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, the Defense Department announced Monday.
Lance Cpl. Joshua H. Birchfield, 24, of Westville, Ind., was killed by small arms fire while he was on a dismounted combat patrol in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Marine Corps officials said. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, out of Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Cpl. Gregory S. Stultz, 22, of Brazil, Ind., also died in Helmand province while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the Okinawa, Japan-based 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion.
Birchfield, a rifleman, was on his first operational deployment, 1st Marine Division officials said in a statement. He had enlisted in the Corps on April 14, 2008 and earned several military awards and decorations, including the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal.
