Hi. To make long story short, I'm 27 years old and I'm getting ready to join the Air Force. I'm not married and I have no children. I've completed some college and I'm in fairly reasonable shape. Having trouble with the running :) but I have started a fitness routine. My whole life I've wanted to be in the military (I'm an Army brat) but I always seemed to have family responsibilities. I'm finally getting the chance to do what I've always felt I was meant for, but now I'm not being supported. The main issue is my age. I even sense my recruiter is a little apprehensive. I was wondering if being 27 is really going to be a problem during boot camp? Honestly? Thanks!

It's only as much of a problem as you make it. The fitness issue seems to be more of a problem with the younger airmen these days; then again, if you haven't been athletic for the past decade, you may have some trouble. Train well now, and nourish yourself even better. It's almost impossible to eat healthily in basic, and you may not bounce back as easily from stress when you can't get fresh vegetables reliably and you're not free to run in for an orange or chicken soup whenever you need to. Remember, they won't let you bring vitamins, so your only way to stay healthy is to KNOW YOUR NUTRITION, and know how you can make the most out of what little healthy fare is available.

Also: if you have any desire to be an officer, get cracking yesterday! You'll already need an age waiver for UPT, and any OTS/follow-on training must be completed before attaining certain birthdays, depending upon the job.

As for the nitty-gritty, day-to-day stuff: You may have less patience with the 18-year-olds than you'd hoped to display. Then again, you may be able to reap the benefits of natural leadership.

You may have less tolerance for what you perceive to be "the game". Biting your tongue may be more difficult than for an 18-year-old, because you DO have life experience. Then again, you experience will allow you to put basic into perspective for the ones who freak or whine.

They may lean on you hard about the "mom" thing (this will most likely be what you're called-- if not, just be thankful!), but if you're in decent shape, they should forget the age difference quickly.

There was a 35-year-old woman in my BMT flight, and she did fine...no more or less of a drag than any female as yet unaccustomed to the military would be. You have an advantage, being an army brat. Go for it , work hard, and to #@&%!&%! with those who won't support you. Good luck!

No 27 is not going to be a problem. keep your self in shape and you will be fine. Being older you have more life experience then a 18 year old does. so dont let it get to you. its never to late to start what you want to do. and those you dont support you like i would say kiss my @#@#$. be strong and do for what you want. good luck.
