I am 21 and have an Associates in Applied Science degree in Police Science and have little over a year before I obtain my B.S. degree in Criminal Justice. I want to become a police officer and eventually go federal. Does anyone have any information, facts, or opinions (more than what the Air Force Reserves website has) on joining the reserves in relation to a career in law enforcement? Also, any thoughts on Air National Guard? Thanks!

In the Air Force, our career field went from a separate Law Enforcement and Security Specialist to Security Forces. Depending on what unit you go to and what their mission is will depend on how much Law Enforcement you do. I am at McGuire and we have a good mix of both. Unfortunately being a reservist you don't receive that much training or experience because you are limited to one weekend a month and two weeks a year. A lot of where you are posted also has to do with rank as well. If you would like more information about the reserve SF career field, please contact me at lauren.stilson@mcguire.af.mil. I will be more than happy to answer any questions that you have.

Once you get your Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, you can also apply for Officer Training School. You can apply for Security Forces and other jobs even though your degree is in Crim. Justice. NOTE: VERY COMPETITIVE PROGRAM RIGHT NOW. Must be willing to take the NEEDS OF THE AIR FORCE.
On the enlisted side, there is a good chance you will get cop as long as you qualify. Women have to be able to lift 70lbs. I agree with the other lady, you will get more experience and training going active. Benefits are better too. You WILL BE BUSY and VERY CHALLENGED. Prepare for a trip to the Desert! It should also be assumed that your first year or so will be training as a cop. You must understand, these guys and gals EARN their positioning, if you can't handle being a gate guard for your first 6 months, how can the Air Force trust you to handle other cop duties, e.g., patrol, etc... Patience is a must. Our security forces are AWESOME!
