I am concerned that my daughter, Whitney, is heading off to basic on Tuesday, Aug. 10 with no MOS. Her recruiter says that she is going in under "general" but she is wanting to get into the Aeromedical Apprt. or cardio-pul. apprt. My son has just hit his 3 year anniversary in the USAF and he had a MOS. Should I be concerned? Can we push for a MOS? Thanks, Darralyn (Military Mom x 2)

Darralyn,
If she was not guaranteed an AFSC (MOS) before Basic Training, then she'll get it in Basic, towards the end of her time. The bad thing is that if you're not guaranteed a job and you go in open general, lots of those get Security Police. Depending on her ASVAB scores, if she has the scores for what she wants, she should get it offered to her in Basic and then she can select it if she wants.

Goals are down, because there are not many jobs out there to recruit for. Difficult times now. Air Force is making cuts. When I recruited (1999-2002), it was SO HARD to get guaranteed jobs in medical before they went to basic. So they had to go General. It was the only way. Risky, but the only way.
They only guaranteed jobs were in the mechanical, electronics areas. Med jobs were scarce!! We would have celebrations for recruiters that somehow got them!
My old saying: "It's not about what you want anymore, it's about what you need". Take the job you can get before you can't get one. I've seen Engineers struggling for work. Take what you can get, then work your way towards your goals while you are in... Good luck.
