What a loaded question and very vague. Do men in the military try to degrade women? Calling on a life time of experience with the military as well as over 20 years plus service, I would have to say as a whole, no men do not degrade women. However, there are those elements that do, but I found them to be a very small minority of men. And those that I did encounter that were that way did so because of their upbringing and beliefs. Same thing for those who thought they were better and again the same thing can be said for the treatment of women during basic. IMO as far as treatment of women overall in the military, you receive what you give. If you do your job and don't try to get over, the majority will treat you in the manner you would treat them in.

You are always going to find that element who treat women like dogs, just like you will always find that element who has no tolerance for any person who is different from themselves.

It is not fair to lump all men into one category as much as it is not fair to equate all women to one level. Don't try to look for problems because you will find them whether they really do exist or not. There are enough problems in the military without creating another one. In the military you have to learn to be able to work as a unit with many people you will not like. The best way to accomplish this is to do your job.

I have run into women who degrade women, think they are better than other women or men, and treat women a lot harder than they do men. The military is made up of all kinds. It's not perfect and neither is the world.

I agree with Paula that the question is loaded and extremely vague. However, I not only do not have 20 years experience, I haven't even been to basic yet. I am basing this only on what I have encountered with military men I have met, worked with, male DEPs, and civilian men that know I am in the ARMY. As Paula said there are all types. Most of the male DEPs here do not want to be in the same unit as a female because they are afraid that females can't keep up with the men in PT and they (the men) will be punished along with the females. Punished=extra pushups, longer runs, etc. Most of the male civilians I know are suprised, but encouraging, though some think I am crazy---but none think a female is as a dog. Granted most wont dare voice that opinion to my face. Military men I have met/worked with don't seem to have a problem with women in the military--but then I am not living on base or working with them all day every day with them either.

Basically, if you look for a problem it will be there. Kinda like my view of basic--if ya think it will be really bad--it will be. But if ya think of it as a challenge, think you can do it, and have a GOOD attitude---you'll have a blast.

I'm not saying it will be easy--but then life is never easy.

I don't feel that military men in general degrade women. However, there will always be men that think women should not serve in the military. Even more so now that more positions are being opened up to women that were only available to men in the past. I went to basic with all males. I understand that ther are some co-ed training sites. I can't say if it happens more or less in basic training. In the military there is no room degrading or discrimination. We are a team, and each memeber is as important as the next. I am a male and would never degrade a women period. Thanks SSG Parker
