Hi everybody,
I was wondering...what does a linguist in the military do all day for her job? Does she sit around and listen to radio transmitions? Or translate written stuff? What does a linguist actually do after learning the language?
Also, I plan to finish my business degree while I'm in (Army) and then go to law school after. Are there any positions in the legal department that might help me gain experience before I become a lawyer? I guess my basic question is, what do these people do all day?
Thanks

Some linguists are stationed in Japan or Europe and listen to Russian transmissions and translate, recording translations on tape. Some linguists work diplomats and ambassadors, translating conversations (phone, dinner, talks, etc.). Some are trained to do interrogations, in case of war situations. Some listen to tapes and type up on computers the translations. Sometimes you are asked to translate documents, but most of it is listening to speech and translating. Good luck. Karen

HI!! And I think its great that your looking into military as a option to finish school and gain experience!! I joined in 1999 and love everything about it! Even training was a blast! I'm stationed in Ft. Jackson, SC. My advice for you is to look into the MOS (job) called 71D that is a legal specialist, you will get so much experience with law and will be great on a resume in the civilian world when you get out of the military. Ask your recruiter to show you the video show on 71D and also, a hint for you, never believe a recruiter that tells you a job is not availible, you can always get a job you want, they will try and put you where the army needs you , but when you sign your contract you are gauranteed that job!! E-mail me anytime if you need help or have questions, im always willing to answer any questions you might have, boy i know i had a illion questions befoer i joined!!! Serena serina42@hotmail.com

Once again Serena is on the money. I made a fatal mistake by not listening to my husband the first time when he told me to not take a position as a COOK. He told me that the guys at the MEPS station would tell me anything to get me to take a position that was understrength. They always try to get you to take the crappy jobs first. And my GT score was 115. I could have had ANY job in the ARMY. Well, I beleived them and took the Cook's job. UGHHH. The AIT was FABULOUS. I went to FT. Leisure (aka Ft. Lee, VA) My husband was able to spend EVERY weekend with me beginning with the very first weekend that I was there. In the base hotel of course. Anyhow, DO NOT LET THE MEPS WORKERS GIVE YOU ANY OLD JOB!!!! Stay firm, let them know what YOU want and do not waiver from that. You will regret it if you take something that you do not want. Beleive me, you will get the job that you want, Granted you are qualified for that job by your ASVAB scores and physical requirements, etc..
