Okay girls, this message if for everyone who is scared to go to basic training!! I was in your shoes one year ago! I had a million questions too, just like ya'll (yes, even the ones ya'll think are stupid questions!) I think I was a nervous wreck up until I got to training, well let me tell you this from experience, take everything anyone has scared you with and throw it out the window!! Im in the Army and did basic, AIT at Ft. Jackson and now im permanantly stationed here, and guess what, I LOVE IT, and would do it over again in a heartbeat, and all my friends say the same thing, actually I miss training!!

I was so worried about all the same things you girls post on here about, such as tampons, showering in front of others, glasses, getting yelled at, PT, all those things, but Army life is nothing like the media makes it out to be!! First off, let me start at basic training, okay, so ya, for the first 5 minutes off the bus the drill sergeants introduce themselves by screaming at all of you , but remember there is hundreds of you for only a few DS, and thats the worst 5 minutes of your training career, its all uphill from there,!! To be truthful, and alot will agree, training is what you make of it, and it is a blast, I have more memories from training than my whole highschool and college times put together!!

Now that im out of training I actually miss training, I want to get out of my office and back in the dirt with my drill sergeants, (who believe it or not, eventually joke with you and become more like your friends then drill sergeants!!) okay, then there is AIT, now its gonna be different of course for every MOS (job) but im a 75B which is a personal administration specalist, which is a fancy title for paper pusher!! I love my job and AIT was alright!! We started getting passes on the weekends and I admit, we clubbed and partied alot! AIT mostly consists of classes, (which are at the preschool level) all day long, 5 days a week, AIT goes really fast.

Now that im at my duty station, which I had FT. Jackson in my contract because I have family here, Life is back to normal!!!! after training, you are your own boss again!! of course you have basic military respect issues, but i go to work just like anyone else, get off at 4 and the rest of the day is mine!! i explain it like this,Military life is no different than civilian life except i dont have to choose what to wear to work!! This is no lie, I enjoy EVERY minute of my Army life, and woundnt change it for anything!! Dont listen to the lies and scares people may feed you! they feed me that BS too! have fun with it and if your leaving soon for training just remember, you make training what it is, keep your head up and create a million memories!! Good luck!! by the way if you are reading this and are interseted in what i look like, you can check out my little picture page at http//:www.geocities.com/serenahumphries/serenaphotos.html you can also e-mail me at serina42@hotmail.com

SERINA! This is sincerely the best response I have read about basic training. You are so posititive! Your message reinforced something very important.....basic training is what you make of it. Thank you very much for keeping it real! I am going to print your message and put it in my ARMY journal. I will definetly read your message again before I leave for basic training on September 13th. Thank you/Lisa. "We see things as we are not as they are" Anais Nin

Serena, YOU GO GIRL!!!! You couldn't have broken it down any better than that. Basic is just that, BASIC. I would just add to anyone getting ready to leave or who has some time left, start some sort of exercise regimen. No matter how you look at it, you will have to run, and you will have to do some pushups. START NOW!!!! Be prepared and get a jump on the other recruits. If you start now doing something, anything then you are that much more better off.
