Usually after AIT they afford you the opportunity to go home. It may be for only a short period depending on how much leave you have accrued. If your AIT is very short, though, they will defer you until you get to your permanent party. The reason that they do this, is the Army doesn't like you to be in negative leave status. Usually when you get in this position, it's almost impossible to get to the positive side. It's easier for the Army to pay you excess leave rather than collect what is owed them, but they do collect and when you get out that can add up to a big chunk.
