Chandra, not trying to sound like an *ss here but look at what you are trying to join here. To be honest with you, no there are no 9 to 5 jobs period end of story. Even jobs that you would think are aren't, hospital work we work on schedules usually 12 hour days 4 on 3 off so pretty set. But guess what come a field problem or other "emergency" you would be surprised how quickly 12 hour days become 14, 16, 24, and even at some times 36 and 48 hours straight. This is in Peacetime now consider deployments, training in field environments, rotations to training centers, Bosnia, Kosovo, Korea (where you cannot even take a family usually) etc. So no there are no 9 to 5 jobs if this is what you are looking for best bet would be to stay civilian. Don't come in expecting a 9 to 5 job I don't care what anyone tells cause they do not exist in the military. If this is what you are looking for and go ahead and join, then you will probably wind up miserable. Hate to be the one to burst your bubble if it happened but again this is the deal. I even had a First Sergeant call all his troops into a formation and tell them this "Look we are an Army, you knew this when you joined, if you cannot work long hours, deploy when necessary, expect us to raise your family and treat you like civilians then I do not need you. As a matter of fact raise your hands cause I have the paperwork right here to put you out. You are not soldiers for an Army, you are a burden to the Army we are paying you and you cannot perform the job at hand do yourself and the Army a favor and leave" his quote not mine and unfortunately what he spoke that day was the truth and a wakeup call to a lot of his troops.

There really are no 9 - 5 jobs. You have to remember that the first thing the Army does in the morning is Physical Training. That starts at 0 dark thirty and the day goes on from there.

If you are looking for consistency, then do not sign up for a Division (82nd, 101st, 4th ID, 2nd Armor, etc.). These are all combat orientated and spend a lot of time in the field or deployed.

You'll want to look for training bases (Ft. Jackson, Ft. Leonard Wood, Aberdeen Proving Grounds) or Headquarters (Ft. Sam Houston, Ft. Meade, Ft. Monroe, Ft. McPherson). The emphasis in these places is training and day to day functioning of the Army.

That's the best advice I can give you.

FYI: I didn't mean 9-5 EXACTLY, I said as much as possible, meaning as much on a schedule as possible. Like the same amount of days and hours. I am totally expecting long hours and such. No one has told me that the Army is easy and I'm not expecting it to be. And, I seriously doubt me having kids is a "burden" to the Army. If it was, then why are they letting parents join??????? If you still would like some MOS advice e-mail me.....I can give you some suggestions on 6:30-5 jobs that have little field time and deployments---despite earlier posts, they do exist....they are hard to come by, but they exist. The kinds of jobs will me mostly personnel administration and a few medical (like working in a dentist office--one of the hardest jobs to get). I think from the other posts you understand that there really aren't jobs that can guarantee you great hours because of the fact that this is the ARMY and we are here to serve--anytime--not just during office hours.
