I joined the Army in 1997 as a 54B (Chemical SPC). I have 11 months of service left. I plan to re-up, but I don't know for what. My MOS has a re-up bonus and I wouldn't have to return to AIT. On the other hand I'm tired of my job and I don't feel a sense of accomplishment with it. I need serious advise for the experienced PLEASE. Any MOS suggestions?

Only you know what you really want, but will tell you this. Reclassification can set your career back. I'm not saying don't do it, but going into a new MOS cold can hold up your promotions because you will be lacking experience that they look for in leaders. This just means your promotions MAY come slower because you are starting again from the beginning. I saw this happen many times within my career.

If you really want to reclass without penalty, do it within your CMF. That way you won't loss all knowledge and only be a little behind. There are a lot of exciting and shortage MOS's within your career group. Check them out, then if you are still not satisfied go ahead with a reclass into the field you want.

The biggest thing to remember about reclassing is to look down the road. What may be a shortage field at your rank may be overstrength at a higher rank. That's what I would look at in reclassifying. Not only must you have job satisfaction, but you need upward mobility.

Did you ever think about personnel or maybe finance? They are definatly a change from being a chem dawg and the AIT's are at the longest 8 or 9 weeks.
