Basic during X-mas

Just a quick question,

A friend is leaving for basic to Jackson around Thanksgiving time and was wondering about going home for the holidays. Does basic shut down for Thanksgiving and Christmas? I wasn't sure, I did mine in the spring/summer.

They shut down for Christmas exodus. Runs from mid December til just after the first of the year. I doubt they let people go home for Thanksgiving.

Does this mean that if you start basic in november, you get to leave basic for a that time at xmas?

I started my basic in October. Thanksgiving Day we got off. The dining facility went all out, but you got a choice of whether to participate or not. I opted to go to the parade field and sit on the cannon and eat a can of cold chili.

Christmas, we were granted to the option of taking leave for two weeks of remain on post doing "hey you" details. I opted for leave, but wished I hadn't. It put me in a negative leave status that took years to make up. If I had it to do over again, I would have stayed on post. It's only one holiday and you might as well get used to missing them. There will be many times where you can't take leave.

It's also hard after leave to get back in the groove of basic. If I had stayed with the details, I would have had a better mind set for the rest of basic.

That down time also extends your basic. Just because there are two weeks down time doesn't mean you get out of basic. It just means you pick up right where you left off. I spent most of my leave time studying and shining boots, but it was being out of the atmosphere that can throw your stride for training off.
