saluting vs not saluting! clean hands vs dirty hands! Just kidding! Think of officers as management at a corporation, and enlisted as the labor force.

Something like that, lol. To clear that up a bit:). From a book that really should be written, "The Military for Complete Civilians" Officers and enlisted dates back to historical history (lol). The enlisted would be the commoners, oftentimes forced into service, quite literally plucked off the streets by roving bands of military people. The officers were the noblemen, royalty, etc, for the most part. Well we obviously no longer have the class systems, but the jobs kind of evolved through time, and officers vs. enlisted has stayed with us. It's now more a matter of education. All officers have degrees. owever, More and more enlisted people come into the service with degrees, earn their degrees while in. So mostly, the great divide is due to tradition. But it's hardly tradition, the divide is great. For instance, enlisted must salute officers, follow orders (though you follow orders of anyone higher up the pole than you anyway, no room for democracy when you're surrounded by gunfire!), are not allowed to date officers/ vice versa or even socialize, this is called fraternization. Officers are paid more, of course. They also have nicer quarters. However, they live under more scrutiny in their public and private lives, and promotions are hard to come by. There's divisions among officers, over whether you're a West Point or Annapolis Grad, or came through ROTC or officer school, or worked your way up from enlisted. Officers are more management types. Enlisted folks get paid less and put up with a lot more. However, there areperks, sign on bonuses you can't get as an officer. The first few promotions are automatic. It's a great way to go after high school or even college for some practicum. Enlisted members pride themselves on being the backbone and foundation of the military. They are the ones who get the Mission accomplished under all conditions. Non Commissioned Officers head up the enlisted corps. It's a matter of preference. And also tradition. You can go from enlisted to officer while in service, with varying degrees of difficulty depending on the branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard). Hope the crash course on enlisted vs. officers helped:).
