I would like to know what is the worst thing you old timers can think of that happen to you or someone else in basic. I am not trying to be negative I just want to get the feel of the situation before I decide anything. Give me some tips of things I shouldn't do while I am in there. I know to use my common sense but I am afraid that is not enough, just a few helpful hints like do I look my drill sargent in the eye, anything!

I can't think of any bad things. There were a lot of hard things to do. Personally the hardest thing for me was learning to keep my mouth shut and reigning in my temper (I have a really nasty one). But as far as anything else went, there were good days and there were bad days. Lots of hurry up and wait. But no one ever really ever got into bad trouble. We were dogged, but that was just part of the program.

Worst things to do in basic...
1. Point your weapon somewhere other than "down range."
2. Fire your weapon after "Cease Fire!" has been called.
3. Assault your Drill Sergeant.
4. Go AWOL.
5. Freak out in the gas chamber and try to run.
6. Mess around with your Drill Sergeant or any other cadre there to try to get ahead.
They don't expect you to know everything there is to know about the military when you go to basic, that is their job. As long as you try and you follow their directions, you will be fine. And yes, you can look your Drill Sergeant in the eye, but if he is in your face yelling at you, you'd best be locked up and have your head and eyes straight forward...and don't lose your bearing.
And I did see everything I listed above happen while I was there.
